Amedeo Modigliani was an Italian modern artist and sculptor who mainly worked in France. Throughout his career he made more than seventy drawings of caryatids, sculpted female figures which serve as architectural support taking place of a column or pillar. Modigliani was also inspired by African art and this influence can be seen in the highly stylised manner and mask like faces of the caryatids.
