In 1912 Italian modern artist Amedeo Modigliani produced ‘Young Man with a Black Waistcoat’ which features an unidentified sitter wearing a white shirt with a black waistcoat. His arm is propped up as though it is resting on a chair which cannot be seen and instead shades of brown and orange make up the background. Like most of Modigliani’s portraits, the man has been depicted with an elongated face and neck and almond shaped holes for his eyes.
