In 1916 Italian modern artist Amedeo Modigliani produced ‘Portrait of Jacques & Berthe Lipchitz’ featuring Modigliani’s friend, the sculptor Jacques Lipchitz, standing next to his seated wife Bethe. As one of only two double portraits painted by Modigliani this piece has been noted for its complex study of contrasting personalities. Berthe was a Russian poet and has been depicted with elongated features and large eyes which contradicts with Lipchitz's small eyes and twisted nose.
