Alphonse Mucha was a Czech painter, illustrator, and graphic artist who mainly worked in Paris, France. He was a key figurehead of the Art Nouveau movement. Taking up poster design for financial reasons, Mucha eventually established himself as a poster artist known for his distinctly stylised and decorative designs. Mucha produced this poster of a young performer known as Lygie wearing an embellished headpiece standing behind a crescent moon. During the 1890’s it was a fashionable pastime for women to play charade-like games in which they would strike poses of certain posters and guess what it was. Inspired by the game, Mucha produced a series of posters using Lygie as his model.
