London based Contemporary Designer Charlene Mullen specialises in surface pattern through her charming black and white illustrations. Her scenic landscapes were inspired by Elizabethan embroidery called ‘Blackwork’, brought to King Henry VIII court by Catherine of Aragon, its motifs filled with patterns and apparently good for hiding the dirt. Charlene Mullen took that idea after noticing all the patterns on the buildings in London and her drawings of her favourite view of Tower Bridge and the City of London with its great variety of buildings dating back to 1078 cheek by jowl to the Gherkin. Scattered throughout the drawing is whimsical touches such as the rooks at the Tower of London or the skull and crossbones alongside the St George’s flag. There’s a cat hiding amongst the trees ever watchful of the birds. Cranes are busy building and there’s a touch of red, the colour you see always see first.
