London based Contemporary Designer Charlene Mullen specialises in surface pattern through her charming black and white illustrations. Her scenic landscapes were inspired by Elizabethan embroidery called ‘Blackwork’, brought to King Henry VIII court by Catherine of Aragon, its motifs filled with patterns and apparently good for hiding the dirt. The Royal Festival hall designed by Robert Matthew and Leslie Martin for the Festival of Britain in 1951 is one of the best buildings in London and a favourite of Charlene’s, making it an obvious choice to draw for her Scenic series of drawings. She includes the Philip Vaughan neon tower sculpture original to the building but now dismantled as the colour always looked so good against the concrete and she has it embroidered in her signature red. Alongside the Festival Hall are the Shell Building, the old GLC Town Hall and the London Eye summing up the melting pot that makes London a great City.
