London based Contemporary Designer Charlene Mullen specialises in surface pattern through her charming black and white illustrations. Her scenic landscapes were inspired by Elizabethan embroidery called ‘Blackwork’, brought to King Henry VIII court by Catherine of Aragon, its motifs filled with patterns and apparently good for hiding the dirt. A favourite city, New York seemed an obvious choice to illustrate. Trying to place the key buildings roughly where they are in the Skyline. The Empire State Building with King Kong takes centre stage and it’s that humour and well as colour that are Charlene’s trademarks. The ‘New Yorker’ is in red but it’s the yellow of the New York cab that say’s New York. Throughout are little additions to amuse, found amongst the patterns and water towers.
