Tamara de Lempicka was a Polish artist who is best known for her Art Deco portraits and stylised nudes which blend refined cubism with a neoclassical style. In 1932 she produced ‘Adam and Eve’ which features a male nude embracing a female nude who holds an apple situated in front of a landscape of stylised skyscrapers. Lempicka was fond of depicting stories about the creation of Adam and Eve and this particular composition came about when one of her models took a break to eat an apple.
