Edgar Degas was a 19th century French Impressionist painter mainly recognised for his pastel drawings and oil paintings. Degas sought to capture fleeting moments in the flow of modern life and particularly identified with the subject of dance. In 1978 Degas produced ‘L'Étoile (The Star)’ which features a lone ballerina on stage balancing gracefully on one leg. The detailed depiction of the dancer is contrasted with the stylised brushstrokes Degas used for the background of the painting. The orange pastel hues and impressionist shading also enhances the radiance of the dancer.
