Edgar Degas was a 19th century French Impressionist painter mainly recognised for his pastel drawings and oil paintings. Degas sought to capture fleeting moments in the flow of modern life and particularly identified with the subject of dance. For ‘Swaying Dancer (Dancer in Green)’ Degas depicted a group of ballerinas performing as viewed from an upper side box at the theatre. Only one girl in a turquoise tutu is shown full length executing a swift turn. Degas cropped out most of the other figures in the painting to draw attention to the young dancer.
