Edgar Degas was a 19th century French Impressionist painter mainly recognised for his pastel drawings and oil paintings. Degas sought to capture fleeting moments in the flow of modern life and particularly identified with the subject of dance. For ‘Jockeys at the Racecourse’ Degas grouped together with the figures in the lower half of the canvas using bright colours to distinguish the jockeys preparing for their next race.
