Edgar Degas was a 19th century French Impressionist painter mainly recognised for his pastel drawings and oil paintings. Degas sought to capture fleeting moments in the flow of modern life and particularly identified with the subject of dance. Degas produced a series of coloured pastel drawings of dancers including ‘Deux Danseuses’. Degas used linear downward strokes to depict the dancer’s red and yellow costumes and used curved strokes to colour the background to create two different textures, which breaks up the scene.
