Edgar Degas was a 19th century French Impressionist painter mainly recognised for his pastel drawings and oil paintings. Degas sought to capture fleeting moments in the flow of modern life and particularly identified with the subject of dance. In 1872 Degas painted ‘ Le Foyer de la Danse à l’Opéra de la rue Le Peletier ’, one of his first depictions of the ballet dancers at the Paris Opera. The painting includes ten ballerinas being instructed in the great hall by the choreographer Louis François Mérante.
