Edgar Degas was a 19th century French Impressionist painter mainly recognised for his pastel drawings and oil paintings. Degas sought to capture fleeting moments in the flow of modern life and particularly identified with the subject of dance. Degas often depicted racecourse scenes as it provided an opportunity to depict the traditional subject matter of horses, but in a more modern context. In 1866 he produced ‘The Parade’ which features a thoroughbred horse jerking nervously, indicating the start of the race.
