Jules Cheret was a French painter and lithographer who became a master of modern poster art. This poster features a group of lively women riding horses advertising a ball at the Moulin Rouge, a cabaret in Paris. Women had previously been depicted in art as prostitutes or puritans, but Cheret was the first poster artist to portray women as elegant and free-spirited.
