Jules Cheret was a French painter and lithographer who became a master of modern poster art. This poster features a lively woman advertising the Ice Palace bar located on the Champs Elysees, an avenue in Paris. Women had previously been depicted in art as prostitutes or puritans, but Cheret was the first poster artist to portray women as elegant and free-spirited.
