In 1874 modern French impressionist artist Paul Cézanne exhibited at the first Impressionist exhibition. Inspired by his fellow artists, Cézanne began painting Plein air - the act of painting outdoors. This encouraged Cézanne to move beyond the style of Impressionism, building form and colour to create an analytical experience. He frequently painted the small town of L'Estaque in southern France. For this interpretation of the town, Cézanne used bright colours and diagonal brushstrokes demonstrating an official departure in his style.
