Tamara de Lempicka was a Polish artist who is best known for her Art Deco portraits and stylised nudes which blend refined cubism with a neoclassical style. In 1929 she produced ‘The Musician’ which draws on a traditional theme – allegorical representations of the arts. In this case, De Lempicka has depicted music as a beautifully elegant dark-haired woman playing the harp. Although deeply influenced by Renaissance painting, Lempicka depicts her interpretation of music against an urban landscape.
