Tamara de Lempicka was a Polish artist who is best known for her Art Deco portraits and stylised nudes which blend refined cubism with a neoclassical style. In the late 1920’s De Lempicka acquired her most important patron, Doctor Pierre Boucard, and his wife. Boucard was a medical scientist and an avid modernist who offered the artist a two- year contract to paint his family, including this portrait of his wife. De Lempicka depicted Mrs Boucard wearing a lavish silk silver dress, wrapped in an orange fur-trimmed coat, reflecting the sophisticated sensuality of the patron.
